Overview of Guru Ravidas

Guru Ravidas was a 15th-century Indian mystic, poet, and saint who lived in the northern Indian city of Varanasi (also known as Banaras or Kashi). He was a member of the low-caste leatherworker community, and is considered to be one of the most important figures in the Bhakti movement of medieval India.

Ravidas was a strong advocate of equality and social justice, and his teachings challenged the caste system and advocated for the liberation of the oppressed. He composed devotional songs and poems in the local language of Punjabi, and his works reflect his devotion to the Hindu god Ram and his message of love, compassion, and unity.

Guru Ravidas’s teachings emphasized the importance of devotion, love, and compassion as the path to self-realization and liberation. He encouraged people to reject the caste system and to seek the divine through devotion, regardless of their caste or social status.

Today, Guru Ravidas is revered by millions of people, especially by members of the Ravidassia community, who consider him to be their spiritual guide and teacher. His life and teachings continue to inspire people to strive for social justice and equality, and to seek the divine through devotion, love, and compassion.

Guru Ravidas’s life and teachings have also had a profound impact on the Bhakti tradition in India, and his devotional songs and poems continue to be widely recited and studied by spiritual seekers and scholars.

Voice of Guru Ravidas

In the time of devotion, in the era of anomalies prevailing in the society, the spirit of human welfare was the main goal of the saint tradition. Saint Ravidas did not try to bring reforms in the society in a negative way like Saint Kabir, but he politely refined the evil tendencies of the human mind, due to which evil practices have arisen in the society. He does not turn away from reality by calling himself a Chamar.

Man is not high or low by birth, he becomes high or low by his deeds. God is the destroyer of the triple gunas in the heart. By taking the name of God, many lowly creatures were saved. The impure became pure after attaining the essence.

“ हम अपूजि पूजि भये हरि तैं , नाम अनुपम गाया रे।
हम अपराधी नीच पर जम्मै , कुटुम्ब लाजकरै हंसीरे। ”

That is, because of being born in a lowly house, he was considered lowly, but he was honored by devotion to God even though he was unworthy. The only reason for the social respect of Guru Ravidas was that his speech was so humble and simple. A person of any religion, caste, caste could make his life successful.

Guru Ravidas emphasized on the same point that the doors of Bhakti are open for all the classes like Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras. Guru Ravidas ji says that a saint may be of any caste, be he poor, God resides there. Brahm, Vaishya, Shudra, Dom, Chandal, Malecha mind is the same.

All these are freed by worshiping the Lord and save their own and others’ clans as well:

“ जिह कुल साधु बैसनौ होई
बरन अबरन रंकू नहीं ईसरू विमल बासु जानी ऐ जागी सोई
ब्रहमन बैस सूद्र अरूख्यत्री डोम चंडार मलेच्छ मन सोई।
होई पुनीत भगवंत भजन से आपु तारि तारै कुल दोई।। ”

With reference to Saint Ravidas, Dr. Naresh writes – “The society depicted in Ravidas Vani connects his poetry with experience. This experience is personal as well as collective. Collective because whatever the poet creates as a social being, his feelings are reflected in it.

In this way, the basis of Ravidas ji’s speech is the personal experience of the poet, which despite being personal, is combined with the quality of collectivity. 8 In this way, the saint poets used to raise voice for justice for the sake of human welfare in a contradictory and praiseworthy manner against the injustice happening in the society.

Indian society which was famous all over the world because of its culture. Few selfish eminent people of the society have divided the society by misusing the caste system. In this way, the division of the medieval society proved to be a curse for the whole country.

Dr . Chandradev Rai says – “Some birth was considered high and some low, the entire leadership of the followers of Hindu religion went into the hands of the Brahmin class and the situation was prepared for the Shudras to be grossly neglected. They were termed as antyaj and even their touch was considered unholy. This class became very neglected from both social and economic point of view.

The Laxman Rekha of health-destructive and hateful service works had bound his intellectual and mental strength. He always had to remain open to the mercy of the upper class.

Sant Ravidas did not support the caste system, but has enlightened the contemporary society with his humble speech by emphasizing on equality, message of equanimity, humanism considering karma-inaction: –

Guru Ravidas has advised the smallness of man and the conservative society to stay away from superstitions in simple words:

Save your inner soul by leaving the smallness. I am Hindu, I am Muslim, I am Christian. Abandoning such thoughts and saving the soul of religion, recognize the voice of the conscience. The fascination of life, dreams are all trivial. Unless you renounce your ego and establish a relationship with Ram, then all wealth, position and prestige are in vain. Thothe Pandit’s scholars are only worldly people. Without self-love, all the words of knowledge are useless.

Temples, mosques, gurudwaras etc. are all trivial. God will not fulfill the hopes of man. But remembering God with reverence is the reality of life. Man’s hope, lust has invented the worldly gods. That’s why getting entangled in smallness is not the meaning of life, it is only an illusion.

Saints were not only social reformers but also gave the message of humanism to improve human character. In the words of Acharya Parshu Ram Chaturvedi, “His monotheistic spirit, the absence of social discrimination and the specialty of religious equality infused a new hope among the downtrodden, enumerated, backward castes, due to which the sense of renaissance and self-reliance started rising in them and their response Even the upper class people here had to loosen their rules of control.

As a result, the inclination of the collective Sant Ravidas attitude of the Indian society gradually became people-oriented. Seeing the enmity between the two religions, the task undertaken by the saints to bring harmony between them and remove the narrow mindedness is as relevant even today as it was in that era. He showed the path of humanity and morality to the common man instead of rituals.

Accepting the essence of a virtuous life, he has said:

“ संत संतोष अरू सदाचार जीवन को आधार
रविदास भये न देवते , जिन तिआगे पंच विकार। ”

Saint Ravidas was fully aware of the circumstances of that time, so his speech propagated humanism by giving favorable message for the society with compassion and calmness. In the times to come, among the millions and millions of people, there will be hardly any person who will perform selfless devotion, selfless service, charity and compassion.

Human-human will see less feeling of love, alienation. Wearing the mask of the ideal for self-interest rather than the interest of the nation, the mind will be engrossed in lust by making desire the mother of happiness as the base. In such circumstances, the study of saint literature is necessary, so that the lost dignity of human beings can be revived. Can illuminate the entire brand with his inner light.

Saint Ravidas and contemporary saints visualized a classless and united society. He was against the orthodox traditions and evil practices prevailing in the society. When Saint Ravidas saw the door closed for the untouchables to go to religious institutions, he was moved:

Dr . In the words of Hukumchand Rajpal, “Sant Ravidas ji understood the reality of the era, suffered bitter experiences of mutual discrimination. Thereafter, working with self-confidence and self-control, he gave his new vision of life to the people – in fact, this philosophy of his life is a direct proof of his being an immortal saint. Today Saint Ravidas is not of any particular class, he is the motivator of the entire Indian public. ,

Saint Ravidas was born for human welfare only. In his view, there is no difference between Hindu, Muslim, high and low. He was constantly striving for Hindu-Muslim unity, to bridge the caste-caste gap, which was his humanistic approach. He told people, position, respect, prestige etc. as small in front of humanity.

In a democratic nation like India, a few selfish politicians who serve the public, after coming to power, rape the sentiments of 1.25 billion Indians by depositing money in foreign banks in the name of serving the nation. Reordering of humanism is inevitable to get rid of man from such situations. The poetry of Saint Ravidas can be helpful in taking human beings in the path of humanism.

If any nation tries to walk on the path of humanism. Through this, not only the welfare of this country but of the whole world is possible. That’s why today it is necessary to study the poetry of Saint Ravidas and bring it into practicality to provide human welfare and existence to the entire human race.

So that the India which led the whole world in the field of spirituality, meditation, philosophy, yoga, that India again becomes the head of the world.
