Overview of Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
This fast falls on the day of Jyestha Krishna Amavasya. It is highly prevalent among married women. All married women observe Vat Savitri Vrat for unbroken good fortune and prosperity of the family. In this fast, women circumambulate around the banyan tree by wrapping raw cotton thread and wish for the long life of their husbands. After which she listens to the story of Vat Savitri Vrat.
Story of Vat Savitri Vrat:
According to the mythological and popular Vat Savitri Vrat Katha, Savitri was the only child of Rajarshi Ashwapati. Savitri chose Satyavan, the son of the exile king Dyumatsen, as her husband. But Savitri did not change her decision even when Narad ji told her that Satyavan was short-lived. She left all the royal glory and started living in the forest with Satyavan serving his family.
Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood. There he fainted and fell down. Savitri put her husband’s head on her lap under the banyan tree and made him lie down. At the same time Yamraj came to take the life of Satyavan. Yamraj is taking Satyavan’s soul towards the south. Savitri also follows Yamraj.
Seeing her coming, Yamraj said – O chaste woman! The wife supports her husband till the earth itself. you go back Savitri said – Where my husband will live, I also have to live there. This is my wife’s religion. She didn’t agree even after Yamraj refused several times, in the end Yamraj was pleased with Savitri’s courage and sacrifice and asked her to ask for three boons.
Then Savitri asked for eye light for her mother-in-law and father-in-law, asked for the lost kingdom of her father-in-law and also asked for the boon of becoming the mother of hundred sons of her husband Satyavan. After hearing all the three boons, Yamraj said – Amen! This will happen. Yamraj started moving forward. Savitri said that Lord, I am a husbandly wife and you have blessed me to be a son. Hearing this, Yamraj had to spare Satyavan’s life. Savitri came near the same banyan tree where her husband’s dead body was lying. Satyavan came alive.
In this way, Savitri not only brought her husband back to life with the effect of her husband’s vow, but also restored the lost kingdom to her father-in-law while providing eyesight to her mother-in-law. Since then, there is a law to worship the banyan tree on Vat Savitri fast. It is said that by observing this fast, the wishes of fortunate women are fulfilled and their good fortune remains unbroken.
