Ashmaka Janapada was the only Janapada in the south during Shodasha Mahajanapada period. Podan (present-day Bodan) was its capital. This information is also enshrined in Buddhist scriptures. Buddhist scriptures state that Sujata was the ruler of Bodhana during the Buddha’s time. The area where Buddhi’s contemporary Bavari settled is today known as Bavanakurti (river island in Adilabad district).

There is also a mention of Manjiraka country (present day Manjira river basin) in Matsyapurana. The Mulaka kingdom ruled by Pratisthanapuram (Paithan) as its capital extended to the border of Godavari river and today’s Adilabad district was a part of it. Then the main north-south route passed through this kingdom. Buddhists living abroad called it Manjiraka (present-day Manjira river basin). During Shodasa Mahajanapada, Magadha kingdom became strong and occupied many kingdoms, then Ashmaka kingdom also merged with Magadha. After that, the Nandarajas and the Pidapa Mauryas ruled this region.
