Sundara Kandam Overview
The Sundara Kanda shows us the power of the name ‘Rama. ‘ Hanuman repeats this name, and it is well known that he was invincible. Sundara Kanda talks of the qualities that an Acharya should have. It is sweet for this reason, for to talk of great men is a pleasant task indeed.
The work depicts the adventures of Hanuman and his selflessness, strength, and devotion to Rama are emphasized in the text. Hanuman was fondly called “Sundara” by his mother Anjani and Sage Valmiki chose this name over others as the Sundara Kanda is about Hanuman’s journey to Lanka.
Summary
A herd of monkeys led by Angada to the southern part of the Bharata continent in search of Sita in the Sundara kandham stayed on the Mahendragiri hill, and on the advice of the aged Kagalkarasan Sampathi there, Hanuman flew in the sky and crossed the sea to Sri Lanka.
Anumar meets Sita imprisoned by Ravana in Ashoka Forest in Sri Lanka, in the form of a small monkey, gives Rama’s Kaniyazhi ring to Sita and introduces himself as Ramadhutha. Sita also gives her forehead bangle to Anumar and begs Rama to release her by waging war against Ravana within a month.
Then Anumar’s tail was set on fire as he was caught by the demons. Anumar came around the city of Sri Lanka with fire placed on his tail and burnt most of the city. Later, Sambhumali, the Pancha Senapatis, and Ravana’s son Adsayakumaran, who came to capture Anumar, were killed by Anumar.[5] Then Anumar gave Sita’s Sudamani to Rama and told him about Sita’s news.
After that Vanaras under the leadership of Nilan and Nalan built a sea bridge to go to Sri Lanka by sea.
