Shailputri Ashtothram Overview

Ammavaru is born as Daksha’s daughter before Shailaputri. We know that Daksha performed the Nireeshwara yagna, and in that Daksha yagna, unable to withstand Shiva’s reproach, Amma burned the body. When Ammavaru disappears, Shiva merges in tapas. The son of Shiva Parvati was needed to kill the demon Tarakasura. Hence the time has come for Amma to emerge. Appreciating Parvataraju and Mainavati penance, Amma gives birth to a daughter.

The mountain is called Sailam in Sanskrit. As she was born as the daughter of Parvataraja, she is known as Shailaputri. Himavantu means the two sons of Parvataraja, Mynaku and Sailaputri. We hear about Mainakudu in Sundarakanda. Rvataraju means king of mountains or Himavant. After Ammavaru is born as Shailaputri, she performs severe penance and pleases Shiva and gets the boon of marrying Shiva himself. Saptarishis and Saptamatrikas talk to Parvataraju about the marriage of Shiva and Parvati. Parvataraju and Mainavati happily agree. Then the gods have a problem.
