Russia-Ukraine Conflict Summary Overview
Relations between the two countries became hostile after the 2014 Ukrainian revolution, which was followed by Russia’s annexation of Crimea from Ukraine, and the war in Donbas, in which Russia backed the separatist fighters of the Donetsk People’s Republic and the Luhansk People’s Republic.
The Ukraine war and subsequent cost-of-living crisis means that the poorest children are even less likely to access essential services and are more at risk of child marriage, violence, exploitation and abuse. The main beneficiaries are China, which started to supply slabs to Europe after a long break, Turkey, Brazil, and India, replacing supplies from Russia, and Ukraine.
Cause of Conflict:
Balance of Power: Ever since Ukraine split from the Soviet Union, both Russia and the West have vied for greater influence in the country in order to keep the balance of power in the region in their favour.
Buffer Zone for Western Countries: For the US and the European Union, Ukraine is a crucial buffer between Russia and the West. As tensions with Russia rise, the US and the EU are increasingly determined to keep
Ukraine away from Russian control.
