Mokshada Ekadashi Vrat Katha Overview
Ekadashi fast is considered very important in Hinduism. There are 24 Ekadashi dates in a year and in the year which has more months, there are 26 Ekadashi dates.
There are 2 Ekadashi Tithis in every month, one of which falls in Shukla Paksha and the other in Krishna Paksha. By observing the fast of Ekadashi with complete rituals, all the wishes made by a person are fulfilled and the person gets happiness, good luck and progress in his life. Lord Vishnu is pleased by observing this fast.
Story of Mokshada Ekadashi Vrat:
Maharaj Yudhishthir said – O God! You are the master of all the three worlds, the giver of happiness to all and the husband of the world. I salute you Hey, God! You are everyone’s well wisher, so remove my doubt and tell me what is the name of Margashirsha Ekadashi? Which deity is worshiped on that day and what is its method? please let me know
Bhaktavatsal Lord Shri Krishna started saying that Dharmaraj, you have asked a very good question. By listening to this your fame will spread in the world. Marshish Shukla Ekadashi is going to destroy many sins. Its name is Mokshada Ekadashi. On this day Lord Damodar should be worshiped with devotion with incense-lamps, naivedya etc. Now in this subject I tell a story from Puranas.
A king named Vaikhanasa used to rule in the city named Gokul. Brahmins who knew all the four Vedas lived in his kingdom. That king used to follow his subjects like a son. Once in the night the king had a dream that his father was in hell. He was very surprised. In the morning he went to the learned Brahmins and narrated his dream. Said- I have seen my father suffering in hell.
He told me that O son, I am lying in hell. You free me from here. I have been very restless ever since I heard these words. There is great disturbance in the mind. I do not feel any happiness in this state, money, son, woman, elephant, horse etc. what to do The king said – O Brahmin gods! My whole body is burning because of this sorrow.
Now you kindly tell me some penance, donation, fasting etc., such a way that my father can get freedom. The life of a son who cannot repay his parents is wasted. A good son who saves his parents and ancestors is better than a thousand foolish sons. Like a moon illuminates the whole world, but thousands of stars cannot.
Brahmins said – O Rajan! Nearby here is the hermitage of Parvat Rishi, the knower of past, future and present. They will definitely solve your problem. Hearing this, the king went to the sage’s hermitage.
In that ashram, many calm yogis and sages were doing penance. Parvat Muni was sitting at the same place. The king prostrated to the sage. Muni took the news of his skill from the king.
The king said that by your grace, Maharaj, everyone is doing well in my kingdom, but suddenly my mind is very disturbed. Hearing this, Parvat Muni closed his eyes and started thinking of ghosts.
Then said O Rajan! I have come to know about your father’s misdeeds by the power of yoga. He gave Rati to one wife in his previous birth, but at the behest of his step-in-law, he did not give it to the other wife even after asking for Ritudan.
Because of that sin, your father had to go to hell. Then the king said, tell me some solution for this. Muni said – Hey Rajan! You fast on Marshish Ekadashi and pledge the virtue of that fast to your father. With its effect, your father will surely be freed from hell.
After listening to these words of Muni, the king came to the palace and as per the advice of Muni, he along with his family observed the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi. He offered the virtue of his fasting to his father. Due to its effect, his father got freedom and while going to heaven, he started saying to the son, O son, may you be well. Having said this, he went to heaven.
Those who fast on Mokshada Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha of Marshish month, all their sins are destroyed. This fast fulfills all wishes like Chintamani and gives salvation. There is no other fast that gives salvation more than this fast. By reading or listening to this story, one gets the fruit of Vajapeya Yagya.
Mokshada Ekadashi is related to Mahabharata. According to mythological belief, Lord Krishna preached the Gita to Arjuna on the Ekadashi date of Marshish Shukla Paksha. During the Mahabharata war, when Arjuna was hesitating to shoot arrows at his relatives, then Dwarkadhish Shri Krishna had explained the essence of Gita to him. That’s why the festival of Gita Jayanti is also celebrated on this day.
Puja Vidhi:
- On this day, after taking bath in the morning, clean the temple of the house and sprinkle Gangajal in the whole house.
- After this, bathe the God with Ganga water in the worship house or sprinkle Ganga water on his picture.
- Offer clothes to them.
- After this do Tilak with Roli and Akshat.
- Decorate God with flowers and sprinkle perfume.
- On the day of Mokshada Ekadashi, first perform the aarti of Shri Hari with Lord Ganapati and then with Goddess Lakshmi.
- Offer fruits and dry fruits to God while worshiping.
- Must offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu. Do fast throughout the day.
- You can eat fruits and if it is not possible to fast for the whole day, then you can eat satvik food at one time.
- Keep your mind calm during the fast. Don’t get angry and don’t abuse anyone.
- Do bhajan-kirtan by lighting a lamp in the evening.
- Lord Shri Krishna, Maharishi Ved Vyas and Shrimad Bhagwat Gita are worshiped on the day of Mokshada Ekadashi.
