Matsya Dwadashi Vrat Katha Overview

Matsya Dwadashi is considered very important in Hinduism. If you want to get the special blessings of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu in your life, then you must observe the fast of Matsya Dwadashi.

The fast of Matsya Dwadashi is related to the fish incarnation of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. Lord Vishnu keeps on coming on the earth from time to time in the form of different incarnations for the salvation of his devotees and for the destruction of the wicked. Matsyavatara is also one of his various important incarnations. If you also want a blissful life, do take advantage of this fast.

Story of Matsya Dwadashi Vrat:

In the east of Kalpat, a pious king was doing penance, that king’s name was Satyavrat. Who was a very charitable and generous and virtuous soul. One day at sunrise, when King Satyavrat took a bath in Kritmala river and took water in Ajnali (in both hands) for Tarpan, a small fish came in it. After which King Satyavrat released that fish in the water.

On this the fish said, O king, big creatures eat small creatures in the water. And in the same way someone will kill and eat me too. Please save my life. The king felt pity for that fish and put that fish in his Kamandal. And took it to his palace and kept it and told the fish that you can live comfortably. You are in no danger here.

Then it was a matter of great surprise that the fish became twice as big in one night, that means it was no longer able to fit in that kamandal. Then that fish said to the king, O king, find some other place for me to live. Because my body has grown. I am finding it difficult to move around. The king took that fish out of the Kamandal and put it in a pot of water. Here too the body of that fish doubled in size overnight and the pot also became too small for it to live in.

The fish again said to the king, O king, choose some other place for me to live. Because this pot is also looking small like a kamandal. After which King Satyavrat took that fish out of the pot and put it in a lake. But surprisingly the lake also became too small for the fish to live. After which the king put that fish in the river, but there too it grew in size, after which the king put the fish in the sea.

Now King Satyavrat was even more surprised because after putting the fish in the sea, its size increased so much. It became too small for the fish to live. So that fish again said to the king, O King Satyavrat, this sea is also not fit for me to live in. Please arrange for my stay. Now the king got thinking because he had not seen any such fish till date.

After which King Satyavrat folded both his hands and said who are you to drown my intellect in Vinaysagar. Because looking at the speed with which your body is growing, it can be said without any doubt that you are definitely divine. If this is true, then kindly tell why you took the form of this fish.

Lord Vishnu was really there in the form of that fish. Shri Hari, in the form of a fish, replied, O king, a demon named Hayagriva has stolen the Vedas. Because of which ignorance and darkness have spread all over the world. And I have taken the form of a fish to kill the demon Hayagriva. So on the seventh day from today, the earth will be engulfed in the cycle of Prilya and the sea will rise due to which the whole earth will be submerged in water. Water will be visible all around, apart from this nothing will be visible.

At the same time a boat will reach you, take all the grains, centuries, seeds and sit in that boat along with the Saptarishis. I will appear to you again at the same time and give you the knowledge of the Self. Saying this, the fish god disappeared from there. After which the king started waiting for the holocaust of the earth on the same day and on the seventh day the scene of holocaust was visible, water started appearing all around. King Satyavrat saw a boat at the same time, the king sat in that boat along with the seven sages.

The king put the seeds of all the grains on the oar of that boat and the boat started floating in the ocean of holocaust. And suddenly King Satyavrat saw Lord Vishnu in the ocean of destruction. King Satyavrat and the seven sages started praying to God in the form of fish. O Lord, you are the beginning of this universe and you are the protector, and you are the protector, so have mercy and take us in your shelter.

On the prayer of the seven sages and King Satyavrat, Lord Matsya became pleased and granted enlightenment to King Satyavrat as per his promise. Told that I reside in all the living beings, no one is high, no one is low. All beings are equal and this world is mortal in which there is nothing except Me. The creature who spends his life looking at me, gets in me in the end. King Satyavrat’s life became blessed by getting enlightenment from God in the form of fish and he became free from life while alive.

When the fury of the holocaust calmed down, God freed the Vedas by killing the demon Hayagriva and gave the Vedas back to Brahma ji. In this way, Lord Vishnu by taking the form of a fish not only saved the Vedas, but also did the welfare of the living beings of the world. This is how Lord Vishnu incarnates from time to time and does welfare of all.
