Margazhi Kolam Overview
People say that the Kolam has been drawn to welcome Lakshmi, the Goddess of Prosperity, into the home and drives away the evil spirits. But the purpose of Kolam these days is to add aesthetic value to the home and be competitive with neighbours’ houses. The kolam has two functions − religious and ornamental. Traditionally, various motifs were drawn on the floor to feed insects with the design made out of edible grains, and the dyes from vegetable colouring. This act of charity is encouraged in Hindu scriptures.
kolam, one begins with dots that have to be joined together with lines, loops and gestures. Kolam is done only with dots. You join the dots with lines, loops and gestures. It is an infinite process.
