List of Prime Ministers India Overview
The office of the Prime Minister of India is the office of the Head of the Government of India. According to the Constitution, he is the head of the Government of India, the chief advisor to the President of India, the head of the Council of Ministers, and the leader of the majority party in the Lok Sabha. He heads the executive of the Government of India. In the Indian political system, the prime minister is the senior most member of the cabinet.
India has had a total of 15 prime ministers since 1947, out of which one was also an interim PM. Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India, who served as the PM of India from 15 August 1947 to 26 January 1950. The Prime Minister of India is the head of government, and is appointed by the President of India irrespective of political party. After winning the General Lok Sabha election, a candidate is nominated for the post. After that, the leader of that political party is appointed as the Prime Minister of India. The first Prime Minister of India was appointed in 1947 and now in 2022 the current Prime Minister of India is Mr. Narendra Modi.
