Background
Kumari Lata Deenanath Mangeshkar was born on 28 September 1929 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Her father Dinanath Mangeshkar was a skilled theater singer. Dinanath started teaching music to Lata when she was five years old. His sisters Asha, Usha and Meena also used to learn with him. Lata also studied with ‘Aman Ali Khan Sahib’ and later with ‘Amanat Khan’. Lata Mangeshkar has always been an example of God-given melodious voice, lively expression and incredible ability to grasp things very quickly. Due to these characteristics, this talent of his was recognized very soon. But it was only at the young age of five that you got the opportunity to act in a play for the first time. It must have started with acting, but your interest was only in music.
His father died in the year 1942. During this time she was only 13 years old. Master Vinayak (Vinayak Damodar Karnataki), owner of Navyug Chitrapat Film Company and his father’s friend, took care of his family and helped Lata Mangeshkar become a singer and actress.

Lata ji has sung songs in great movies like Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Do Bigha Zameen, Mother India, Mughal-e-Azam, etc. You added to the popularity of these films with the magic of your voice in films like “Mahal”, “Barsaat”, “Ek Thi Ladki”, “Badi Behen” etc. Some of his famous songs during this period were: “O Sajna Barkha Bahar Aai” (Parakh-1960), “Aaja Re Pardesi” (Madhumati-1958), “Itna Na Mujhe Tu Pyaar Badha” (Chhaya- 1961), “Alla Tero Naam” ”, (We both-1961), “Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujhe Par”, (Junglee-1961), “Yeh Sama” (Jab Jab Flowers Khile-1965) etc.
