Karthika Puranam Overview
Worship the Lord in this way every day during the month of Kartika. There is no greater virtue than reading the Geeta in the month of Kartika. The result of donating land up to the seven oceans is like bathing in the month of Kartika and giving charity. Annadanam is best in the month of Kartika because this world survives only on food.
In this month, the deity is appeased by performing religious activities like kirtans and bhajans in temples. The lamp should be lit in the temples themselves, charity should be done.
It is believed that whoever sleeps on the ground in the month of Kartik, all his sins are destroyed. And if a person takes a bath in the Ganges at the time of Arunodaya, he washes away the sins of all his births.
Karthika Puranam :
Earlier, when Suta Maharshi came to Naimisaranya, he was honored and satisfied by the monks of Shaunakadi and asked us to bless him by listening to the greatness of Kartikamasa, which is Kaivalyadayakam. Sutarhi Sanakadula, the scholar who granted their wish! As our teacher Raina Bhagavan Vedavyasa Mahershu has praised this Kartika Mahatma – Skanda and Padma Puranas of Ashtadasa Puranas. This Kartika Mahatma has been told in detail in the Skanda Purana by the sage King Sri Vasishtula, to the King Janakuna in the Skanda Purana, to the Helavilasa Balamani Satyabhama, and by the Leelamanusha idol Sri Krishna Paramatma in the Padma Purana.
Due to our luck, the month of Kartika starts from today. So – every day as a regular recitation – let’s listen to the Kartika Purana throughout this month. First of all, I will recite the greatness of Kartika inspired by Vashishta in Skandapurana – listen,’ Janaka continued saying, “Kartika Prata Dharmamuladu of Vashishta”.
For the first time, sage Vashishtha, who was in need of sacrifices, went to Janakamaharaja’s house. He was well received by Janaku and mentioned his arrival. Janaka happily agreed to that – ‘Hey Brahmarshi! I will give you whatever amount of money you need for your sacrifice. But tell me the all-sinful Dharmasukshma.
It is said that the month of Kartika is the most glorious month of the year, and tadkvatacharan is the best of all virtues! What is the significance of that month? That Vrata has become like the highest virtue,’ he asked –
Vashishtha, the sage Vashishtha, with a sense of wisdom, spoke thus.
