Guru Mahima Overview
This is a very beautiful composition of Guru Bhagwan Ji. Both reading and listening to Guru Mahima are considered beneficial for a person. Guru Bhagavan is called the Sustainer of the Universe and His form is very calm and blissful.
It is believed that if you recite the glories of Shri Guru regularly, all the troubles of a person’s life will be destroyed. At the same time Guru Kripa ki is also received. If you recite it on Thursday, it is more auspicious and gives the desired result to the person.
Guru Mahima Lyrics:
गुरु सो ज्ञान जु लीजिये, सीस दीजये दान।
बहुतक भोंदू बहि गये, सखि जीव अभिमान॥१॥
Explanation: Get knowledge from the Guru by offering your head. But not accepting this lesson and taking pride in body and wealth, so many fools got swept away from the world, did not get engaged in Gurupad-ship.
गुरु की आज्ञा आवै, गुरु की आज्ञा जाय।
कहैं कबीर सो संत हैं, आवागमन नशाय॥२॥
Explanation: Even in practice, the monk should come and go according to the orders of the Guru. Sad gurus say that a saint is the one who does spiritual practice to overcome birth and death.
गुरु पारस को अन्तरो, जानत हैं सब सन्त।
वह लोहा कंचन करे, ये करि लये महन्त॥३॥
Explanation: All saints know that there is a difference between a Guru and a Paras-stone. Paras only makes iron into gold, but Guru makes disciple as great as himself.
कुमति कीच चेला भरा, गुरु ज्ञान जल होय।
जनम – जनम का मोरचा, पल में डारे धोया॥४॥
Explanation: The disciple is full of mud like misunderstanding, the Guru’s knowledge is water to wash it. Gurudev destroys the evil of birth after birth in a moment.
गुरु कुम्हार शिष कुंभ है, गढ़ि – गढ़ि काढ़ै खोट।
अन्तर हाथ सहार दै, बाहर बाहै चोट॥५॥
Explanation: The guru is a potter and the disciple is a pitcher, with the support of the hand from within, the evil of the disciple comes out by hitting and beating from the outside and making a fortress.
गुरु समान दाता नहीं, याचक शीष समान।
तीन लोक की सम्पदा, सो गुरु दीन्ही दान॥६॥
Explanation: There is no giver like a guru, and no requester like a disciple. More than the wealth of Trilok, the Guru gave the gift of knowledge.
जो गुरु बसै बनारसी, शीष समुन्दर तीर।
एक पलक बिखरे नहीं, जो गुण होय शारीर॥७॥
Explanation: If the Guru resides in Varanasi and the disciple is near the sea, but the disciple will have the qualities of a Guru in his body, which will not forget even a single part of the Guru.
गुरु को सिर राखिये, चलिये आज्ञा माहिं।
कहैं कबीर ता दास को, तीन लोकों भय नाहिं॥८॥
Explanation: Considering the Guru as the crown of your head, follow his orders. Kabir Sahib says that such a disciple-servant is not afraid of all the worlds.
गुरु सो प्रीतिनिवाहिये, जेहि तत निबहै संत।
प्रेम बिना ढिग दूर है, प्रेम निकट गुरु कंत॥९॥
Explanation: As you have become, maintain your love for the guru and the saints. Despite being near, without love they are far away, and if there is love, then the master is near.
गुरु मूरति गति चन्द्रमा, सेवक नैन चकोर।
आठ पहर निरखत रहे, गुरु मूरति की ओर॥१०॥
Explanation: The idol of the Guru is like the moon and the eyes of the servant are like the square. Therefore, at eight o’clock keep looking at the guru-murti.
गुरु मूरति आगे खड़ी, दुतिया भेद कुछ नाहिं।
उन्हीं कूं परनाम करि, सकल तिमिर मिटि जाहिं॥११॥
Explanation: The idol of the Guru is standing in front, do not consider any other difference in it. Stop serving them, then all darkness will disappear.
ज्ञान समागम प्रेम सुख, दया भक्ति विश्वास।
गुरु सेवा ते पाइए, सद् गुरु चरण निवास॥१२॥
Explanation: Knowledge, sage-communion, love for all, exalted happiness, kindness, devotion, truth-form and abode in the shelter of a true guru – all these come from the service of the guru.
सब धरती कागज करूँ, लिखनी सब बनराय।
सात समुद्र की मसि करूँ, गुरु गुण लिखा न जाय॥१३॥
Explanation: The qualities of a guru cannot be written even after writing all the earth with paper, all the forest with pen, the seven seas with ink.
पंडित यदि पढि गुनि मुये, गुरु बिना मिलै न ज्ञान।
ज्ञान बिना नहिं मुक्ति है, सत्त शब्द परमान॥१४॥
Explanation: Great scholars, by reading and listening to the scriptures, take pride in being knowledgeable, but without a guru they do not get knowledge. There is no salvation without knowledge.
कहै कबीर तजि भरत को, नन्हा है कर पीव।
तजि अहं गुरु चरण गहु, जमसों बाचै जीव॥१५॥
Explanation: Kabir Saheb says that give up the illusion, become a small child and drink the milk of Guru’s words. Thus giving up the ego and take refuge at the feet of the Guru, then only the soul will be saved.
सोई सोई नाच नचाइये, जेहि निबहे गुरु प्रेम।
कहै कबीर गुरु प्रेम बिन, कितहुं कुशल नहिं क्षेम॥१६॥
Explanation: Move your mind and senses in that way, so that love for the Guru increases. Kabir Sahib says that without the love of the Guru, there is no well being.
तबही गुरु प्रिय बैन कहि, शीष बढ़ी चित प्रीत।
ते कहिये गुरु सनमुखां, कबहूँ न दीजै पीठ॥१७॥
Explanation: Seeing the increased love in the mind of the disciple, the guru gives salvation. So be in front of the guru, never turn away.
अबुध सुबुध सुत मातु पितु, सबहिं करै प्रतिपाल।
अपनी ओर निबाहिये, सिख सुत गहि निज चाल॥१८॥
Explanation: Mother – Father Nirbudhi – The wise take care of all sons. Just like a son, Gurudev impresses the disciple with the manner of his dignity.
करै दूरी अज्ञानता, अंजन ज्ञान सुदये।
बलिहारी वे गुरु की हँस उबारि जु लेय॥१९॥
Explanation: By applying the knowledge of knowledge, the ignorance of the disciple is removed. Praise is to those gurus who save living beings from Bhava.
साबुन बिचारा क्या करे, गाँठे वाखे मोय।
जल सो अरक्षा परस नहिं, क्यों कर ऊजल होय॥२०॥
Explanation: What should the poor soap do, when it is tied in a knot. It does not touch with water, then how can the cloth be bright? Bhava – I have uttered the words of knowledge, but do not think about it, so how can the mind be pure.
राजा की चोरी करे, रहै रंक की ओट।
कहै कबीर क्यों उबरै, काल कठिन की चोट॥२१॥
Explanation: If someone wants to escape by stealing from the king’s house and taking shelter of the poor, how will he survive. Similarly, by hiding the face from the Sadhguru, and taking shelter of the imaginary Gods and Goddesses, how will the living being be saved from the difficult injury of Kalpana?
सतगुरु सम कोई नहीं, सात दीप नौ खण्ड।
तीन लोक न पाइये, अरु इकइस ब्रह्मणड॥२२॥
Explanation: In seven islands, nine parts, three worlds, twenty one brahmando you will not find anyone as beneficial as a Sadhguru.
सतगुरु तो सतभाव है, जो अस भेद बताय।
धन्य शिष धन भाग तिहि, जो ऐसी सुधि पाय॥२३॥
Explanation: Sadguru is the one who tells the difference between truth and emotion. Blessed is the disciple and blessed is the fate of the one who has attained the awareness of his form through the Guru.
सतगुरु मिला जु जानिये, ज्ञान उजाला होय।
भ्रम का भाँडा तोड़ी करि, रहै निराला होय॥२४॥
Explanation: Found a true guru – know this thing only when the light of knowledge shines in your heart, by breaking the veil of illusion, you can attain the unique form of knowledge.
मनहिं दिया निज सब दिया, मन से संग शरीर।
अब देवे को क्या रहा, यो कथि कहहिं कबीर॥२५॥
Explanation: If you have given your mind to the Guru, then know that you have given everything, because along with the mind is the body, it has surrendered itself. What is there to give now?
जेही खोजत ब्रह्मा थके, सुर नर मुनि अरु देव।
कहैं कबीर सुन साधवा, करू सतगुरु की सेवा॥२६॥
Explanation: In search of the salvation Brahma, Sur-Nara-Muni and the gods were all tired. O saints, to attain Him, serve the Sad Guru.
जग में युक्ति अनूप है, साधु संग गुरु ज्ञान।
तामें निपट अनूप है, सतगुरु लगा कान॥२७॥
Explanation: The unparalleled method in the world to get rid of sorrows is the company of saints and the knowledge of the guru. The best thing in that is to listen to the words of the Satguru.
डूबा औधर न तरै, मोहिं अंदेशा होय।
लोभ नदी की धार में, कहा पड़ा नर सोय॥२८॥
Explanation: A man drowned in the earth does not survive. I have this doubt that in the river of greed – oh human beings – where do you sleep lying.
केते पढी गुनि पचि मुए, योग यज्ञ तप लाय।
बिन सतगुरु पावै नहीं, कोटिन करे उपाय॥२९॥
Explanation: How many people pretend to become knowledgeable by reading the scriptures – fasting Guna and Yoga, but without the Satguru, they do not get knowledge and peace, even if one takes crores of measures.
सतगुरु खोजे संत, जीव काज को चाहहु।
मेटो भव के अंक, आवा गवन निवारहु॥३०॥
Explanation: O saints – if you want the welfare of your life, then seek the Satguru and by erasing the marks, stains or sins of Bhava, become free from birth and death.
यह सतगुरु उपदेश है, जो माने परतीत।
करम भरम सब त्यागि के, चलै सो भव जलजीत॥३१॥
Explanation: This is the true teaching of the Satguru, if the mind believes, the Karam who follows the teachings of the Satguru leaves the illusion, the world becomes submerged by the ocean.
जाका गुरु है आँधरा, चेला खरा निरंध।
अन्धे को अन्धा मिला, पड़ा काल के फन्द॥३२॥
Explanation: One whose Guru is indiscreet, his disciple himself will be very indecisive. The unreasonable disciple found an unreasonable guru, as a result both fell into the hands of Kalpana.
जनीता बुझा नहीं बुझि, लिया नहीं गौन।
अंधे को अंधा मिला, राह बतावे कौन॥३३॥
Explanation: Do not walk on the path of Paramarth, knowingly and consciously from a wise guru. If the blind is found blind, then who will tell the way?
