GST rate slabs are decided by the GST Council. The GST Council reviews rates periodically. It’s common for luxury items to be taxed higher and necessities to be taxed at a much lower rate. Under the India GST law, goods and services are split into 4 brackets: 5%, 12%, 18% & 28%.
The 44th GST Council met under the Chairmanship of Union Finance & Corporate Affairs Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman. The meeting has decided to reduce the GST rates on specified items during Covid-19 relief and management.
