Story Of Govardhan puja :
Once all the Brij residents were going to worship Lord Indra together. At that time, Lord Krishna’s param incarnation of Lord Vishnu was doing child pastimes in Brij itself. When Shri Krishna came to know about the worship of Indra Dev, he told all the residents of Brij that you should worship Govardhan Parvat instead of worshiping Indra Dev. Because under the canopy of this mountain all the Brij residents are able to live their life happily.
The people of Brij liked this very thing of Lord Shri Krishna and they decided that every year from now onwards, they will worship Shri Govardhan Parvat every year on Pratipada Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. When Lord Indra came to know about this, he got angry and rained heavily in Brij.
It is believed that in order to protect the residents of Brij, Lord Shri Krishna held the Govardhan mountain for seven days on his little finger i.e. the little finger and protected all the Brijwasi. That is why since then the tradition of performing Govardhan Puja is going on. Because it is said that Lord Govardhan protects all his surrendered devotees. It is said that Mount Govardhan is a form of Lord Krishna.
