India is the seventh-largest and world’s second most populous country in the world. It lies on the Indian Plate, which is part of the Indo-Australian Plate. The Indian subcontinent, known as South Asia, is bordered by three different bodies of water. On the map the closest sea is the Arabian Sea followed by the Bay of Bengal and finally the Indian Ocean. India is bounded in the southwest by the Arabian Sea and in the southeast by the Bay of Bengal.
It occupies most of northern, central and eastern India, with the Deccan Plateau occupying the remaining southern territory. The Thar Desert extends from the west of the country toward the east. It is made up of a mix of rocky and sandy desert. India’s eastern and northeastern border consists of the high Himalayan range. India is bordered by Pakistan, the People’s Republic of China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives. Politically, India is divided into 28 states, six federally administered union territories and a national capital territory.
