Essay about Lachit Borphukan Overview

Lachit Borphukan was a commander and Borphukan in the Ahom kingdom located in present – day Assam , India , known for his leadership in the 1671 Battle of Saraighat that thwarted a drawn – out attempt by Mughal forces under the command of Ram Singh to take over Ahom kingdom . He died about a year later due to illness .

Bir Lachit Barphukan was a great general who fought against the Mughals. He was born in 1622 in Pragjyotishpur. His military career was very successful and he is credited with driving the great Mughals out of Assam.

His popularity increased at the Battle of Saraighat in 1671. At that time, the Ahom king Pratab Singh appointed Lachit Baphukan as the commander-in-chief of the Ahom army. Lachit showed his patriotism and devotion to his land (Ahom kingdom) in the Battle of Saraighat.

He even beheaded his uncle to protect his land. He appointed his uncle to supervise the construction of earth walls for the fortifications in preparation for war. When Lachit arrived at the work site for inspection, he found that the work was not progressing.

Lachit Borphukan Essay:

Lachit Barphukan was the commander of the army. He was born on 24 November 1622 in the Boro kingdom of present-day Assam. His father was Momai Tamuli Barbarua (Governor of South Assam and Commander of the Army of Assam) and his mother was Kunti Maran.
He was the youngest son of his parents. After completing his studies in humanities and military strategy, he was appointed as Saladhara Barua (Personal Secretary) to the King of Koon.

He was also appointed to other important positions such as Superintendent of the Royal Horse Stable and Superintendent of the Home Guard. King Chakradwaj Singh was impressed by his duty, integrity and discipline and made him Commander in Chief of the Deum army.

When Lachit was appointed commander, the Mughals occupied Guwahati and forced the elders to sign an insulting treaty called the Treaty of Ghilajhari Ghat in The treaty had several strict conditions hence the early king Chakradwaj Singh refused to sign it and resolved to free the entire region from the Mughal Empire.

Chowdhury attacked the Mughals under the command of Lachit. Feroze Khan and many others were imprisoned and Guwahati was once again liberated.

The Battle of Saraighat:

The Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb appointed the famous Rajput general Ram Singh to lead an expedition against Assam. In 1669, Ram Singh arrived in Assam with more than 18,000 troops and the war began.
The Smodic war lasted for nearly two years, but Ram Singh failed to break Madhav’s army. One day Ram Singh’s army killed 10,000 original soldiers, it gives a huge blow to the Deum soldiers, and they start feeling inspired.

Lachit, on the other hand, fell ill. Ram Singh wanted to take advantage of this situation and he almost succeeded in breaking the Puja defenses through a naval battle in the waters of the Brahmaputra at Saraighat.
Lachit saw himself carried in the boat despite his illness and joined the battle. Lachit’s soldiers were inspired by his courage and started fighting with full enthusiasm and defeated Ram Singh. Ram Singh left Assam on 5 April

Lachit died of illness in 1672 at the age of Lachit remains a hero in the history of Assam with his great courage, patriotism and devotion to duty. Lachit Day is celebrated in Assam on 24 November every year to commemorate the heroism of Lachit Barphukan and to celebrate the victory of the Battle of Saraighat.
Lachit Barphukan Maidan was built in 1672 by His Majesty Udayditya Singh in memory of Lachit Barphukan.
