To complete the worship of Lord Chitragupta, it is very necessary to recite the story of Chitragupta Vrat. Reciting Chitragupta Katha is considered very beneficial. You too can earn meritorious benefits by reciting this story.
Story of Chitragupta Puja:
Once Yudhishthira said to Bhishma – O father! By your grace I have listened to the scriptures, but what is the merit of Yama Dwitiya? What is fruit? I want to hear this. Please tell me in detail.
Bhishma said – You asked a good thing. I will explain that perfect fast in detail. The Dwitiya which is on the bright side of Kartik month and the dark side of Chaitra is called Yama Dwitiya.
Yudhishthira said – Who should be worshiped on the second day of the bright side of Kartik and how should this fast be observed in the month of Chaitra? Whom to worship in this?
Bhishma said – O Yudhishthira! I tell the story of mythology. There is no doubt that by listening to this story, the creature gets rid of all sins. In Satyuga, from Lord Narayana, who has a lotus in his navel, Brahmaji with four faces was born from him, from whom the Vedavetta Lord called the four Vedas. Narayan said – O Brahmaji! May all of you be in your turiya stage, form and speed of yogis, with my permission, create the whole world soon.
On hearing such words of Hari, Brahma ji was filled with joy and created Brahmins from his mouth, Kshatriyas from his arms, Vaishyas from his thighs and Shudras from his feet. He created Manuji by creating gods, Gandharvas, demons, demons, snakes, serpents, creatures of water, creatures of land, rivers, mountains and trees etc. After this, Daksha created Prajapatiji and then asked him to create more creations. 60 daughters were born to Daksha Prajapati, out of which 10 were given to Dharmaraja, 13 to Kashyap and 27 to Moon.
Apart from these gods, demons, demons, other castes of gandharvas, vampires, cows and birds were born from Kashyapa. Knowing Dharmaraj as the head of religion, Brahmaji, the father of all, gave him the right of all the worlds and told Dharmaraj that you should work by giving up laziness. Just as the living beings have done good and bad deeds, in the same way, according to the method mentioned in the Vedas, give the fruits of action to the doer and always obey my orders.
Hearing the orders of Brahmaji, the wise Dharmaraja, with folded hands, said to the most revered Brahmaji, O Lord! I request your servant, that what you have commanded me to give departmentally the fruits of the actions of the whole world, is a great act. By obeying your orders, I will do this work so that the doers will get the fruits, but the creatures and their bodies are also infinite in the whole creation. Karma is also infinite due to the distinctions of the country, the known and the unknown, etc.
In them how many did the doer, how many enjoys, how many are there and what is his enjoyment and these actions also become many due to the main and secondary distinction and how the doer did it, did it himself or did it with the inspiration of others etc. Karma cycles are very deep. . So how will I be able to carry this load alone? Therefore, give me such an assistant, who is religious, just, intelligent, quick, expert in writing, miraculous, ascetic, celibate and knowledgeable of Vedas.
The creator, knowing the truth of such prayerful statement of Dharmaraja, was pleased in his mind and started worrying about fulfilling Yamraj’s wish that a knowledgeable writer with all the above qualities should be a man. Without him Dharmaraj’s wish would not be complete.
Then Brahmaji said – O Dharmaraja! I will help you in your right.
Saying this, Brahma became meditative. In that state he did penance for 1,000 years. When the samadhi opened, he had a dark complexion, lotus eyes, a conch-shaped neck, an enigmatic head, a moon-like face, a pen-drug and water in his hand, great intelligence, one who magnifies the honor of the gods, great in the thoughts of religion. The writer, seeing a man who is clever in action, asked him, who are you?
Then he said – O Lord! I don’t know the parents but have appeared from your body so name me and say what should I do?
Hearing that man’s words, Brahma ji laughed at the man born from his heart and said – You have appeared from my body, because of your position in my body, that’s why your name is Kayastha Chitragupta. You have been born in the temple of Dharmaraja, that is why you became his friend in writing the auspicious deeds of the living beings.
Brahma said this to Chitragupta and said to Dharmaraja – O Dharmaraja! I have given this best author to you, which is to maintain the dignity of all Karmasutras in the world. Saying this, Brahma ji disappeared.
Then the man (Chitragupta) went to the city of Koti and got engaged in worshiping the huge volcano Kaliji. After fasting he instilled the feeling of Chandikaji with devotion. He chanted the Jwalamukhi Devi with great devotion and worshiped and worshiped the goddess with hymns in this way – O Lord of the world, salutations to you, Mahadevi! Hello to you Salutations to you, the giver of light to the worlds like heaven, death, Hades etc. Lord of the evening and night, salutations to you. Salutations to you, Saraswati, dressed in white clothes.
Salutations to you Goddess Chandi Devi, the goddess who gives radiance to the gods in the form of Sat, Raja, and Tamogun.
devoid of good and inferior qualities, who has the tendency of the Vedas, manifests 33 categories of deities, nirguna, without virtues, beyond virtues, giving of virtues, having 3 eyes, having 3 types of idols, giving boons to the seekers O Chandika, the one who destroys the demons, gives the kingdom to the gods Indra, the goddess worshiped by Shri Hari!
Give me the same boon as you give to the gods Indra. I have praised you for the rights of the worlds, there is no doubt about it.
Hearing such praise, the goddess gave a boon to Chitragupta. Deviji said – O Chitragupta! You worshiped me, with this I have blessed you today that you will be always stable in your authority and will live for innumerable years. By giving this boon, Durga Devi ji became meditative. After that Chitragupta accompanied Dharmaraja to his place and he was situated on his seat to worship.
At the same time, the best of the sages, Susharma, who wanted to have children, worshiped Brahma. Then Brahma ji happily found his daughter named Iravati and married her with Chitragupta.
From that girl, 8 sons of Chitragupta were born, whose names are – Charu, Sucharu, Chitra, Matiman, Himavan, Chitracharu, Arun and the 8th Atindriya. The second Manu’s daughter Dakshina was married to Chitragupta, he had 4 sons. Listen to their names too – Bhanu, Vibhanu, Vishwabhanu and Viryavan. These 12 sons of Chitragupta became famous and roamed the earth-plane.
Among them, Charu went to Mathuraji and stayed there and went to Mathura. O king, Sucharu Gaur went to Bengal, because of which he became Gaur. Chitrabhatta went to the city near the river, from which he came to be known as Bhattanagara. Bhanu settled in Srivasa Nagar, from this he was called Srivastava. Himavan worshiped Amba Durgaji and stayed in Amba city, hence he was called Ambashta. Sakhsen went to Matiman with his wife in the city, due to which he was called Suryadhwaj and many castes settled in many places.
At that time a king on earth named Saudas was born in the city of Saurashtra. He was a great sinner, a stealer of foreign wealth, attached to foreign women, arrogant, swindler and committer of sinful deeds. O king! From birth till his entire life he did not do any religion. At some point the king took his army and went to play hunting in the forest where many animals like deer used to live. There he saw a brahmin fasting continuously. That Brahmin was worshiping Chitragupta and Yamrajji.
It was the day of Yama Dwitiya. The king asked- Maharaj! What are you doing? The brahmin narrated the Yama Dwitiya fast. Hearing this, the king worshiped Dharmarajji along with Chitragupta with incense and lamps on the second day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartika on the same day. After fasting he came to his house. After a few days, his mind forgot and forgot the fast. When he remembered, he fasted again.
After some time, by chance, that king Saudas died. The Yamdoots tied him firmly and brought him to Yamrajji. When Yamrajji saw that nervous minded king being beaten up by his messengers, he asked Chitraguptji, what did this king do? At that time, listening to Dharmarajji’s words, Chitraguptji said – He has committed a lot of misdeeds, but divinely made a fast, which is Yama Dwitiya in the Shukla Paksha of Kartik, on that day your and mine smell, sandalwood, flowers etc. Worshiped by the rule of law and by waking up in the night. Hey, God! O lord! For this reason this king is not fit to be thrown into hell. On this saying of Chhatrapati, Dharmaraja freed him and he attained the best speed due to the effect of fasting on this Yama Dwitiya.
Hearing this, King Yudhishthira said to Bhishma – O father! How should humans worship Dharmaraj and Chitragupta in this fast? So tell me
Bhishma said – Listen to the law of Yama Dwitiya. Make an idol of Dharmaraja and Chhatrapati at a holy place and imagine their worship. After consecrating them both, Dharmarajji and Chitragupta ji should be worshiped with various types of dishes, laddus, fruits, flowers, paan and dakshinadi materials with 16 types and 5 types of material. Say hello again and again.

Worship with sandalwood, camphor, agar and naivedya, paan, dakshina etc. and listen to the story. Take food at sister’s house and give money etc. to her.
