Overview of Biography of Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda was born on 12 January 1863 at Shimla Pallai in Calcutta (now known as Kolkata), and died on 4 July 1902 at the age of 39. Swami Vivekananda’s teacher or teacher was Ramakrishna Paramhans.

He was a very famous and influential spiritual teacher of India. Apart from this, he was also an intense thinker, a great orator and a passionate patriot. His real name was Narendra Nath Dutt. Later he was named Vivekananda, which was given to him by Raja Ajit Singh of Khetri in Shekhawati region of Rajasthan.

Swami Vivekananda’s entire life was so great that many people were impressed by learning from his life. He represented Sanatan Dharma on behalf of India in 1893 in the World Religion General Assembly held in Chicago, America. He was responsible for the revival of Hindu spiritualism and established Hinduism as a revered religion on the world stage.

  • Born in an ordinary family, Narendranath became Vivekananda on the strength of his knowledge and brilliance. Swami Vivekananda was one of the many great men of India who worked to make India famous all over the world.
  • Through his speech, he informed people about Hinduism all over the world and through his great works, he brought great fame to Sanatan Dharma, Vedas and Gyan Shastra in the western world and gave the message of peace and brotherhood to people all over the world.

Life introduction of Swami Vivekananda

  • India has been witness to many saints, scholars and philosophers. Swami Vivekananda himself was a great saint, scholar and philosopher. His father’s name was Vishwanath Dutt, who practiced law in the Calcutta (Kolkata) High Court and mother’s name was Bhuvaneshwari Devi.
  • Swami Vivekananda was one of the main followers of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. His birth name was Narendranath Dutt. He was a person of Indian origin, who introduced the Hindu philosophy of Vedanta and Yoga to Europe and America.
  • He revived Hinduism in modern India. His inspirational speeches are still followed by the youth of the country. He had introduced Hinduism in 1893 at the World’s Religion General Assembly in Chicago.
  • Swami Vivekananda was influenced by the rational mind of his father and the religious nature of his mother. He learned self-control from his mother and later became an expert in meditation. His self-control was indeed amazing, using which he could easily enter the state of Samadhi. He developed remarkable leadership qualities at a young age.
  • He came in contact with Sri Ramakrishna after being introduced to the Brahmo Samaj at a young age. He started living in Boranagar Math along with his brothers. In his later life, he decided to visit India and started traveling from place to place and reached Thiruvananthapuram, where he decided to attend the Chicago Conference of Religions.
  • He became popular all over the world after giving his effective speeches and lectures at many places. It is believed that, he went to his chamber to meditate and died while meditating.

Education of Swami Vivekananda

  • Narendranath mostly studied at home. Apart from studies, he was also interested in acting, sports and wrestling. He was proficient in many arts. He was full of energy since his childhood. He was proficient in Sanskrit language. He studied at the Presidency College, Calcutta (Kolkata). He was good at philosophy. He joined the Brahmo Samaj.
  • He left his studies after his father’s death. This disturbed his mind greatly. During all this, he met Saint Ramakrishna Paramahansa at Dakshineswar and became his disciple. He became Vivekananda after passing through ‘Nirvikalp Samadhi’.
  • Later, he took charge of Saint Ramakrishna’s Math. He went to many pilgrimage places across the country. In 1893, he joined the Parliament of Religions in Chicago. There he told about the culture and characteristics of the East.

Thoughts of Swami Vivekananda

  • Swami Vivekananda’s thoughts are more inspirational. He was a very religious person as he was interested in Hindu scriptures (eg – Vedas, Ramayana, Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata, Upanishads, Puranas etc.). He was also interested in Indian classical music, sports, physical exercise and other activities.
  • He attracted the attention of many Indian leaders through nationalist ideas. He was praised by Sri Aurobindo for the spiritual awakening of India. Mahatma Gandhi also praised him as a great Hindu reformer who promoted Hinduism.
  • His thoughts worked to explain the true meaning of Hinduism to the people and also changed the attitude of the western world towards Vedanta and Hindu spirituality. For these very works of his, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari (he was the first Governor General of independent India) said that Swami Vivekananda was the person who saved Hinduism and India.
  • His influential writings inspired many Indian independence activists such as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Arvind Ghosh, Bagha Jatin, etc.

Swami Vivekananda’s contribution to the nation

  • In 1897 AD, he established ‘Ramakrishna Mission’. Here the followers were taught about the Vedic religion. The mission also did social services. Schools, hospitals, orphanages etc. were opened for the poor. The goal of the mission was to spread awareness about Indian culture.
  • He was very enthusiastic about Hinduism and succeeded in creating a new thinking about Hinduism among people both inside and outside the country.
  • He became successful in promoting meditation, yoga, and other Indian spiritual paths to self-improvement in the West. He was a nationalist ideal for the people of India.

Epilogue

  • Swami Vivekananda taught the world to respect Indian culture and tradition. He was a great saint, philosopher and true patriot.
  • Swami Vivekananda was such a person, who continues to inspire people even after his life and from whose life we ​​can always learn something or the other.
  • His birthday is celebrated as ‘National Youth Day’.
