Story of Bhai Dooj:
The legend of Bhai Dooj is as follows, Surya Dev’s wife Sangya had two children. One son Yamraj and one daughter Yamuna. When the noun could not bear the effulgence of the sun god, she made her own shadow and handed over her two children to that shadow and went away. On the other hand, Yamuna, who was very fond of her brother Yamraj, always used to go to her brother Yamraj’s house. Every happiness supported him in sorrow. Then after marriage Yamuna used to invite her brother Yamraj to come to her house too, but due to busyness Yamraj could not go to her house. Once upon a time, on the second day of Kartik Shukla, Yamraj reached his sister’s house.
Before going to his sister’s house, Yamraj had also freed the living beings living in hell. After this, when Yamraj went to his sister’s house, his sister Yamuna welcomed and honored him with joy and applied tilak on his head. Presented food and dishes etc. in front of his brother. When Yamraj got up to walk from his sister Yamuna’s house, he requested his sister to ask for the boon she desired.
On requesting more by her brother Yamraj, Yamuna ji said, “Brother, if you want to give me a boon, then give me this boon today that every year on this day you will come to my house and accept my hospitality. Along with this, the brother who will go to his sister’s house on this day and accept hospitality and accept sweets by getting tilak etc. Along with this, Yamuna also asked for a boon from her brother Yamraj that the brothers and sisters who take a dip in Yamuna ji on this day would themselves get the ability to escape from Yamraj’s wrath. Yamraj ji accepted all the things of his sister Yamuna ji and gave her a boon as per her wish. It is said that since then this holy festival of brother and sister started being celebrated in the Hindu society, Bhai Dooj.
